Live preview before converting Detects Live Photo/burst frames Real PNG palette optimizer Hit an exact target size No uploads, ever
Why this converter

Built to handle iPhone photos better than the average converter

See it before you convert

Most HEIC tools can't even show you a thumbnail, since browsers can't render HEIC natively. This one decodes the photo on the spot, so you see the real image the moment you drop it in.

Private by default

Decoding and conversion happen with your browser's own engine. Your photos are never uploaded to a server, so there's nothing to leak.

Finds hidden frames

Live Photos and burst shots can pack several images into one HEIC file. This tool detects that and lets you choose the right frame instead of guessing.

"Why is my PNG so much bigger than the HEIC?"

Most tools just wrap your photo in a PNG container and stop, leaving you with a file several times larger, since HEIC is a far more efficient format. Drag the optimizer slider to quantize the palette, like pngquant, and watch the size drop.

Live size estimate

Move the optimizer slider and a live badge shows the estimated size change immediately, calculated from a real test encode of your own photo, not a generic guess.

Hit an exact size budget

Switch on target size, type a KB limit, and the tool automatically searches for the highest color count that still fits, per image, in one pass.

Process

Three steps, nothing complicated

01

Add your HEIC photos

Drag and drop .heic or .heif files, or click to browse from your device. Each photo decodes and renders as a real thumbnail right away.

02

Optimize, or leave it lossless

Watch the live size estimate as you drag the color slider down, leave it at 256 for a byte-exact lossless PNG, or flip on target size for a KB budget instead.

03

Convert & download

Grab each PNG individually, or all at once as a ZIP - no sign-up required.

ℹ About HEIC → PNG

HEIC is Apple's default photo format since iOS 11 - great at squeezing quality into a small file, but poorly supported outside Apple's own ecosystem. PNG stores every pixel losslessly and has been supported essentially everywhere for decades, which is why it's the safer choice whenever an image needs to stay pixel-exact for further editing, or open in older or non-Apple software.

Tip: leave the optimizer at 256 for a byte-faithful lossless PNG. If the HEIC is a Live Photo or burst shot, pick the frame you want from the thumbnail strip before converting.

Free Online HEIC to PNG Converter

imgxcolor's HEIC to PNG converter decodes your iPhone photos and re-encodes them as PNG directly in your browser - no software, no file uploads, no cost. Drop in one photo or your whole camera roll, optionally shrink the result with the palette optimizer, and download the results in seconds.

It's built for anyone who needs a HEIC to open in software, a website, or a device that doesn't support Apple's format, while keeping every pixel exactly as captured.

HEIC vs. PNG, at a Glance

HEIC wins on efficiency, but PNG still wins on being universally supported and easy to edit further.

Why Convert HEIC to PNG

Since iOS 11, iPhones save photos as HEIC by default because it keeps strong image quality in a small file size. But the format never became universal: plenty of older software, some Android phones, Windows programs, and many upload forms still can't open it directly.

PNG is the better target specifically when the image needs to stay pixel-exact - a screenshot, a scanned document, a graphic with sharp edges and text, or any photo you plan to keep editing. Because PNG stores color data losslessly, nothing is thrown away or re-compressed the way a lossy format's encoding does.

How the PNG Size Optimizer Works

Leave the slider at 256 colors for a fully lossless, pixel-exact PNG. Drag it lower and the tool quantizes the image to that many colors using a real palette encoder - similar to pngquant - which can shrink flat graphics and screenshots dramatically with little visible difference. Photos generally band and look blotchy below 200 colors, so the tool nudges you toward a sensible range based on what it detects in your image.

Live Photos and Burst Shots

A HEIC file can bundle more than one photo underneath - for example the burst frames behind a Live Photo. This converter detects that automatically and shows a small thumbnail strip so you can pick the exact frame to convert instead of guessing.

Privacy - 100% Client-Side

Every conversion runs locally with JavaScript and the Canvas API. Your photos are never uploaded, stored, or transmitted, which makes this converter safe for personal photos or any file you'd rather not send to a third-party server. There are no accounts, no sign-ups, and no usage limits.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are my HEIC photos uploaded to a server?

No. imgxcolor decodes and converts every HEIC file locally in your browser tab, so nothing is ever uploaded - which is also why you get a live preview of the photo before you even hit convert.

Why do iPhone photos save as HEIC instead of PNG?

Since iOS 11, iPhones save photos as HEIF/HEIC by default because it stores strong image quality in a small file size. The trade-off is that many older apps, Windows programs, and websites can't open it directly, so converting to a universal format like PNG is often needed.

Why convert HEIC to PNG instead of JPG?

PNG stores every pixel losslessly, so nothing is thrown away the way JPG's compression discards detail. That matters if you plan to keep editing the photo, need a screenshot or graphic to stay perfectly sharp, or just want a pixel-exact copy of the original.

Will converting HEIC to PNG rotate or crop my photo?

No. The converter reads the orientation stored in the HEIC file and renders the image the right way up automatically, at its original resolution.

Why is my new PNG file so much bigger than the original HEIC?

HEIC is an extremely efficient format, often under half the size of an equivalent PNG, while a plain PNG stores every color exactly with no lossy compression. This tool includes an optional PNG size optimizer that quantizes the color palette, similar to pngquant, to shrink the result back down.

How does the PNG size optimizer slider work?

Leave it at 256 colors for a fully lossless, pixel-exact PNG. Drag it lower and the tool quantizes the image to that many colors using a real palette encoder, which can shrink graphics and screenshots dramatically with little to no visible difference. It's less suited to photos, which tend to band at low color counts.

My HEIC file has more than one photo - what happens?

Some HEIC files, such as Live Photos or burst shots, bundle several images in a single file. When that's detected, a small thumbnail strip lets you pick exactly which frame to convert.

How does the target file size option work?

Turn on target size, enter a maximum in KB, and the tool automatically searches for the highest color count that still fits under that budget for each image, instead of you dragging the slider by trial and error.

Can I convert many HEIC files at the same time?

Yes. Drop in as many HEIC/HEIF files as you like - a whole camera roll if you want - apply the same optimizer or target-size setting to the batch, convert them together, and download every result at once as a ZIP.

Is there a limit on file size or number of images?

No hard limit - only what your device's memory can comfortably handle. The tool is free, has no watermark, and doesn't require an account.
